THE CIRCLE OF LIFE

JANUARY

The herds of the Migration are thickly settled into the southern plains of the Serengeti, near Lake Ndutu. The southern plains are made up of phosphorus-rich soils from the short rain season (November-December), which provide nutritious grazing for the herds. Wildebeest, zebra & gazelle begin to give birth to new life towards the end of the month; And so, the great circle of life begins.

FEBRUARY

Calving continues amongst the wildebeest, zebra, gazelle. Nearly 500,000 wildebeest are birthed in a 2-3 week window. The herds are consistently on the move looking for fresh grasslands; they can be found in the southern plains & western corridor. The abundance of new calves grabs the attention of predators.

Where to be: Southern Plains of the Serengeti: Ndutu & Kusini. Ngorongoro Crater.

MARCH

Calving continues into the beginning weeks of March. The herds begin the journey in search for fresh grasslands. Predator action continues as calving season begins to come to an end.

Where to be: Ndutu region will offer the best chance for action of the herds. Ngorongoro Crater.

APRIL

Southern plains of the Serengeti begin to show their strain, the herds begin the slow, treacherous journey to the western corridor. Due to its long grass plains and thick woodlands, the journey is slow for the herds and can make game drives a bit of a challenge.

Where to be: South-western plains of the Serengeti, Seronera region, Ngorongoro Crater.

MAY

Southern plains of the Serengeti begin to show their strain, the herds begin the slow, treacherous journey to the western corridor. Due to its long grass plains and thick woodlands, the journey is slow for the herds and can make game drives a bit of a challenge.

Where to be: South-western plains of the Serengeti, Seronera region, Ngorongoro Crater.

JUNE

The herds continue to make their way through the western corridor enjoying the grassy plains until the lands are desolate. The herds eventually merge, creating a massive mega herd along the southern banks of the Grumeti River. River crossings continue throughout the month, offering quite a spectacle for tourists. Crocodiles in the waters of the Grumeti, wait patiently for their feast of wildebeest & zebra to splashdown.


Where to be: Western Corridor, Seronera, Ngorongoro Crater

JULY

After the Grumeti River crossing, the herds begin to spread out over the wild plains while heading north to the Masai Mara. In this journey north, the herds will begin to approach the Mara River. Mara river crossings can begin as early as July. Tourists can stake out spots for river crossings on either side of the Mara River, as it is a common misconception that the Mara separates Kenya & Tanzania.

Where to be: Northern Serengeti, Seronera, Ngorognoro Crater

AUGUST

After the Grumeti River crossing, the herds begin to spread out over the wild plains while heading north to the Masai Mara. In this journey north, the herds will begin to approach the Mara River. Mara river crossings can begin as early as July. Tourists can stake out spots for river crossings on either side of the Mara River, as it is a common misconception that the Mara separates Kenya & Tanzania.


Where to be: Northern Serengeti, Seronera, Ngorognoro Crater

SEPTEMBER

Herds may still be scattered across the northern Serengeti, either still crossing the Mara River to enter the plains of the Masai Mara, or they continue grazing on the plains alongside the river. River crossings will continue throughout the month. The abundance of lions, cheetah & hyena continue to enjoy their live buffet.

OCTOBER

The herds pay a short visit in the lands of Kenya’s Masai Mara, but the rains in the southern Serengeti begin to grab the attention of the wildebeest’ heightened sense of smell. The long journey south begins, spilling into the northeast region of the Serengeti.

Where to be: Northeast Serengeti, Seronera, Ngorongoro Crater

NOVEMBER

The herds begin to pick up the pace heading south. Most of the herds have departed the plains of the Mara. The herds spread from the Lobo region to Seronera.

Where to be: Northern Serengeti, Seronera, Ngorongoro Crater

DECEMBER

The herds begin to reach the southern plains of the Serengeti where the fresh grass that called them from the Mara, awaits them.

Where to be: Seronera, Ndutu, Ngorognoro Crater.
